Ghana’s leader of Parliament Hon Alban Bagbin has suspended four Members of parliament for 2 weeks.
These members are Hon Nelson Rockson Dafeamekpo, Hon. Jerry Ahmed Shaibu, Hon. Alhassan Tampuli and Hon Annoh-Dompreh.
The Honorable Members of parliament have been suspended due to their involvement in chaotic scenes created in parliament on 30th January 2025.
The scenes disrupted the vetting proceedings and truncated the process for more than 30 minutes. The violence also destroyed microphones and tables belonging to parliament.
The Committee on selection are to meet later in the day and reconstitute the Appointments Committee to fill the vacancies left by the suspensions. Additionally, Parliament has been directed to file a criminal complaint over the incident to the police for further investigation.
Furthermore, the MPs involved are to be surcharged for damage to state property.
Since the beginning of the just ended Parliament and the reconstitution of this very one, there have been pockets of chaotic scenes in the house. Some even date back to parliament sessions before these last two. However, the latest disruption has been described by many Ghanaians as very unfortunate and distasteful.
The character displayed by these MPs has been described as one that has dented the image of parliament. This has led many to express disappointment in the members of parliament and demanded appropriate behavior befitting of honorable members.
