In 2024, scientists reported a seventh person who appears to be cured of HIV after receiving a stem cell transplant. The case was presented at the 25th International AIDS Conference in Munich, Germany.
The patient was a 60-year-old German man who received a stem cell transplant in 2015 for acute myeloid leukemia.
The patient stopped taking antiretroviral treatment in 2018 and HIV was not detected in multiple samples
The drug lenacapavir showed promising results in clinical trials, suggesting it could virtually eliminate new HIV infections through sex.
UNAIDS wants a revolutionary HIV prevention drug to be made available to everyone who needs it.
Its been hailed as a game changer for HIV. It was approved in 2022 as a treatment for HIV. Lenacapavir requires just two injections a year and has shown remarkable success in trials.
But it currently costs each patient more than $40,000 a year. Hence researchers want more financial aid in order to make the drug accessible to all.
