The department’s official legal name remains the Department of Defense. Congress must approve any permanent change. The order instead authorizes ceremonial and public use of the historic titles

A Symbolic but Bold Shift

Trump said the change revives America’s warrior spirit. He argued that the word “defense” sounds too passive for a strong military power.

“The United States needs clarity, strength, and a warrior ethos,” Trump declared at the signing ceremony.

Supporters say the rebrand highlights readiness for conflict. Critics warn it risks projecting aggression abroad and may distract from defense priorities.

Hegseth to Use Historic Title

Pete Hegseth, a former Army officer and longtime Trump ally, will now be introduced as the Secretary of War at ceremonies and official events.

The title will not replace the statutory “Secretary of Defense” designation in law or budgets. Instead, it serves as an additional title for ceremonial and communications purposes.

Historical Background

The Department of War was created in 1789 and managed the U.S. Army for more than 150 years.

After World War ll, Congress passed the National Security Act of 1947, which dissolved the War Department. It became the Department of Defense in 1949, uniting the military branches under one structure

Political and Global Reaction

Republican lawmakers praised the decision. Many Democrats criticized it, saying the term “war” could send the wrong message to allies and rivals alike.

Analysts note that most modern nations avoid “war” in their defense ministries. They instead use terms like defense, security, or armed forces.

Still, Trump views the rebrand as part of a larger effort to reshape the Pentagon’s identity. It also marks the 200th executive order of his second term .
