After the three petitions seeking Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo’s removal from office were found to have a prima facie case, She has been suspended by President Mahama.
The decision, in line with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and taken in consultation with the Council of State, was announced on Tuesday, April 22
The President has also appointed a five-member committee to look into the petitions.
The committee is chaired by Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, a Justice on the Supreme Court. Justice Pwamang was appointed to the Supreme Court bench in 2015.
During his 2024 campaign, Mahama (then opposition leader) criticized the judiciary, accusing some judges of bias in election-related cases.
He vowed to “overhaul the judiciary” if elected, but did not mention suspending the Chief Justice.
