Ghana marked May Day (Labour Day) on Thursday, May 1, 2025, with nationwide events honoring workers’ contributions and advocating for labor rights.
The holiday, observed on May 1 (Thursday), is a public nationwide celebration, dating back to Ghana’s first May Day in 1960 under Kwame Nkrumah.
President Mahama’s return to office in January 2025 followed promises to tackle youth unemployment and inflation.
Mahama’s administration is prioritizing job creation, skills training, and export-led growth, but faces pressure on environmental and labor rights issues.
Labour Day highlighted ongoing challenges, including a $2.5 billion power sector debt and food price surges
Speaking to a sizable crowd in Accra’s Black Star Square today (May 1, 2025) as part of the 2025 May Day festivities, President Mahama urged public sector employees to stand up for the sustainability of their workplaces and stated his unwavering support for those who reveal misconduct.
He emphasized that employees must actively participate in protecting their institutions since they have a stake in their continued existence and prosperity.
The Trades Union Congress (TUC) also remains vocal on wages and illegal mining, testing government-labor relations. The union has accused the government of inadequate action to halt environmental degradation.
