The National Film Authority (NFA) of Ghana has issued a stern warning to television stations in the country regarding the unauthorized broadcasting of creative works, emphasizing the violation of copyright laws and the negative impact on the creative industry.
The NFA has called out TV stations for illegally airing films, series, and other audiovisual content without proper licensing. This practice has been described as a violation of the Copyright Act, 2005 (Act 690) and a threat to the growth of Ghana’s creative sector
The Authority has received numerous complaints from both local and international content creators, including Nigerian filmmakers like Bimbo Ademoye, who publicly criticized Ghanaian TV stations for airing her movies without permission.
The NFA has warned that offending TV stations risk license suspension or revocation if they continue unauthorized broadcasts. It is collaborating with regulatory bodies to investigate and enforce penalties
The NFA urged broadcasters to:
-
Obtain proper licensing agreements.
-
Fairly compensate content creators.
-
Ensure all films are classified before airing
