Prime Minister Mark Carney declares trade war after US negotiations fail, promising retaliatory tariffs starting September 8

Canada-US Trade Talks Collapse : Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has condemned the latest US tariffs. He calls them a deliberate attempt to “hurt and divide us.”

This follows the dramatic collapse of bilateral trade talks late Friday. Consequently, the breakdown marks a significant escalation in North American trade tensions. Moreover, Carney now confirms Canada will match US tariffs “dollar-for-dollar.” This retaliation starts effective September 8.

Canada-US Trade Talks

“They asked too much, and they offered too little,” Carney stated Saturday. He described the current state of relations as a trade “war.” “You’re at war when you get attacked. We got attacked,” he added.

Furthermore, the failed negotiations upend a deeply integrated trading relationship. Historically, this has been one of the world’s most integrated partnerships. However, there is now no clear path to resolution. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has not yet commented on the breakdown.

Canada-US Trade Talks – What’s at Stake

The United States has imposed new 50% tariffs on approximately $20 billion worth of Canadian imports, adding to existing duties on steel, aluminum, automobiles, and lumber. The expanded tariffs target Canadian wine, dairy, cement, clothing, and hockey equipment—representing about 5% of total Canadian imports to the US.

Carney confirmed Canada will retaliate “reluctantly” to protect national interests, with detailed counter-measures to be announced in the coming days. The prime minister emphasized the US presented “unacceptable” terms that included restrictions on Canada’s ability to pursue new trade deals with other nations.

Bipartisan Support

Canadian political leaders have rallied behind Carney’s response. Conservative opposition leader Pierre Poilievre called the new US levies “unjustified,” while Ontario Premier Doug Ford declared Trump “can’t be trusted.”

British Columbia Premier David Eby strongly condemned US demands, stating they “would reduce us to the economic equivalent of the 51st state. It was never acceptable to Canadians.”

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette warned of likely job losses resulting from the escalating trade conflict.

Blame Game

Both sides have accused each other of derailing negotiations.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Fox News Saturday that Washington will not resume talks. He also added that the US had prepared to reduce some tariffs on Canada. However, those concessions were part of the failed agreement.

Carney rejected US claims about last-minute Canadian requests. “We clarified what was on offer,” he said. “We were continually disappointed by the answers,” he added.

Canada-US Trade Talks – Economic Impact

While proponents of tariffs argue they protect American manufacturing and create domestic jobs, critics contend they raise prices for US consumers and disrupt global economic stability. The current escalation threatens to damage both economies and potentially trigger broader trade disruptions.

Bottom line: Canadians now face an uncertain economic future as both nations dig in, with Carney’s government preparing to release specific retaliatory measures in the coming days. The September 8 deadline for reciprocal tariffs gives both countries little time to find a diplomatic off-ramp.
