A viral video featuring a Ghanaian university student has ignited fierce debate after she responded to alleged accusations of abandoning an elderly man who sponsored her education right from Junior High.
The young lady, only identified as a Level 100 (first-year) student, dismissed the man’s emotional public outcry, stating she does not owe him anything and criticizing his unannounced visit to her hostel.
The video, which circulated widely on social media, shows the elderly man “weeping” on campus, lamenting how he funded her tuition and expenses only to be “dumped” after her admission.
In her rebuttal, the student argued that the relationship was mutually beneficial. She said “so didn’t he also touch me”, basically implying that the old man didn’t help her out of kindness alone.
Her comments have polarized online audiences, with some condemning her ingratitude and others questioning the man’s motives for sponsoring a much younger female. Social media reactions ranged from sympathy for the man—with users calling it a wasted investment and an unwise decision.“ Others asked, What did he expect from a teenager?”.
Without shame or remorse, the lady said “He should have informed me before coming to my hostel. That was disrespectful,…you can’t just come into my hostel because you paid the fees”, framing his actions as intrusive.
As the video continues to trend, neither party has indicated plans for reconciliation. While some argue she owes him gratitude, others contend the man’s expectations were unrealistic from the start.
The incident underscores the complexities of mentorship and dependency in modern Ghanaian society—where education remains a prized commodity, but not without strings attached
