A first-year student at the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) has reportedly committed suicide after discovering his girlfriend’s infidelity.

The incident, which occurred on April 16, 2025, has sent shockwaves through the university community and sparked discussions on mental health and emotional resilience among students.

The student allegedly found his girlfriend in an intimate situation with another man at GUSSS Hall Two, a residential facility on campus.

Eyewitnesses reported that he collapsed in distress before later taking his own life. He hanged himself shortly after the traumatic discovery. While his official name has not been released, some sources refer to him by the nickname “Khon Void”

A clinical psychologist, Garnet Linda Naa Adukwei Acquaye, explained that such extreme reactions often stem from Underlying mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety), Emotional dependency on a partner, making a breakup feel like “grief”, Lack of coping mechanisms with some individuals may see suicide as the only escape from overwhelming pain.

This is not an isolated case—a similar incident occurred at Sunyani Technical University (STU) in March 2025, where a student killed himself after his girlfriend cheated with a course mate.

While the Winneba Police have taken custody of the body and began investigations, UEW is yet to release an official statement.

The students are however calling for better mental health support on campus.
