Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced tightened immigration laws aimed at foreign workers and international students.

The Trudeau – led government earlier in the last week of August 2024 announced a cancellation of the temporary process which allows immigrants to change their visitor visa status to work permit while in Canada.
Another report from Canada says about 70,000 international students risk deportation from the South American country after their work permits expire at the end of 2024.

Additional strict measures are to ensure international students work off campus for only 24 hours a week from the start of September 2024
The government also hopes to reduce student permits by 35 percent effective September 1, 2024.

These tight measures have led to massive protests in some parts of Canada: Prince Edward Island, Ontario, Manitoba and British Columbia. These protests aim to pressure the government to rescind its decision on the announced deportations.

According to the Canadian embassy in Nigeria, not less than 15,000 out of the 70,000 potential deportees are Nigerians.
