Hon Samuel Okudzetoe Ablakwa, member of parliament for North Tongu on Peace FM’s morning show during the sports segment lamented the performance of the Ghana Blackstars and the failure of the Ghana Football Association to holistically deal with the problem.
The Honorable member of parliament lamented the fact that the problems of Ghana are so numerous that spending a whooping 8.5 m dollars for a competition that has 7m dollars as the prize money is unreasonable and lacks common sense.
He outlined recent problems the country is facing that could have been solved easily with that amount that was reportedly used for the AFCON.
He mentioned that Korle-bu Teaching Hospital for instance needed “only 4m to operate the renal unit. He further stated that, within a very short time, people have died in the renal unit because its operations somehow seemed stalled because of insufficient funds. He also mentioned problems like lack of incubators in various hospitals, women giving birth on the bare floor as well as the deficiency in the operations of the school feeding program.
Hon Ablakwa, commenting on the actions of the Ghana Football Association thinking that sacking the head coach Chris Hughton will solve the footballing problems is misleading. The member of parliament further stated that the association using the coach as a scapegoat and excusing itself and its members from all blame is regrettable.
The honourable member supported the argument that has been propounded by many Ghanaian football supporters and journalists that there should be an official apology from the Ghana football association. Further investigation and inquiries should be made into why the black stars gave such an abysmal performance at the 2023 AFCON to properly understand the problem and find an appropriate solution.
