On August 14, John Ofori stood before fellow delegates at the 31st AFS Youth Assembly. He received the Outstanding Youth Delegate Award for his impactful work. “I have had my own fair share of lack, disadvantage, and fear of what the future holds,” he shared with delegates.
Building Organizations That Empower Youth
In 2020, Ofori took his first bold step forward. He founded Rethink Investment (Africa), an NGO focused on youth empowerment. The organization provides financial literacy and future-of-work readiness training.
In 2023, he launched his second venture, Rethink Africa Intelligence. This company trains young people aged eight to eighteen in artificial intelligence. The training makes AI practical and accessible for solving local problems.
Saving Lives Through Innovation
Recently, Ofori’s team developed an AI-powered emergency response system. This system helps ambulances reach people faster during critical moments. High mortality rates in Ghana often link to “No Bed Syndrome” at hospitals. In many communities, the difference between life and death depends on time. Ofori’s innovation directly addresses this urgent healthcare challenge.
Lessons for Aspiring Changemakers
Ofori offered powerful advice to fellow delegates at the Assembly’s close. Fear often stands between us and our comfort zones, he explained. Once you conquer that fear, real change becomes possible. Stepping beyond comfort zones unlocks transformative potential.
“You don’t need to feel ready to start,” Ofori emphasized. Change simply asks for your willingness to begin. This lesson emerged from his journey of building two organizations.
A Call to Leaders and Institutions
Ofori addressed leaders and institutions directly during his speech. “We don’t need to be rescued, we need to be trusted,” he stated firmly. Young people need space to lead and build. When trusted, they deliver remarkable results.
“Build your own table if you must,” Ofori encouraged delegates. Don’t wait for invitations to existing structures. Create new opportunities where none exist.

Ofori concluded with an inspiring call to action. “One by one, let’s take our places in the empty spaces,” he urged. Together, delegates can build a better world.
