Senior American officials have revealed that the US President executed a clandestine evacuation from Ankara at the end of last month’s NATO summit, secretly swapping aircraft to evade a confirmed Iranian threat.
While the President publicly claimed he returned to the US via the new luxury Air Force One, a daring security operation unfolded behind the scenes. Reports indicate that the White House moved him onto a military jet, utilizing a diversion involving a catering container, to smuggle him out of Turkey without detection.
The ‘Snap Decision’ to Switch Aircraft
The decision to switch planes came as a “snap decision” as the NATO summit concluded. Senior officials explained that the President discussed his options with senior staff as intelligence regarding the threat solidified.
Instead of departing on the new 747-8 luxury jet controversially donated by Qatar that he had arrived in, the President left Ankara airport on July 8 using an older version of Air Force One.
Reports suggest that only Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accompanied the President during this urgent plane change. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and other senior staff remained on the older aircraft, creating a decoy for the official motorcade.
The Iranian Threat: Shoulder-to-Air Missiles
The threat posed by Iran was considered “extremely serious and immediate” and included the potential use of shoulder-to-air missiles. This level of danger prompted the unprecedented security measures.
The move occurred against the backdrop of the US military carrying out a series of large-scale strikes in Iran in retaliation for Tehran’s attacks on merchant shipping in the region. This escalation likely prompted the Iranian leadership to place a target on the US President, forcing the security apparatus to act.

When asked about these restrictions during the journey from Mildenhall to the US, the President remarked that he has threats against him “all the time” and that he is Iran’s “number one” target.

Officials quoted by NBC described the situation as “probably the most unprecedented level of alertness we’ve ever been at.” The Secret Service acknowledged the responsibility to address the threats facing the President.
