The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration is taking decisive action to seek answers and justice following the tragic death of Ghanaian citizen Nana Agyei Ahyia in Latvia.

Hon Ablakwa said :
“In a firm demonstration of commitment, I personally met with the bereaved family of the late Nana Agyei Ahyia at the Foreign Ministry earlier today
I directly conveyed the government’s deepest condolences to them. Furthermore, I comprehensively briefed the family on the concrete interventions the Ministry has already executed.
Our immediate priority remains securing transparent answers and achieving justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia.”
Deploying a Fact-Finding Mission
Firstly, the Ministry acted with urgency after learning of the incident.
“We promptly dispatched a fact-finding mission from our embassy in Germany, which holds concurrent accreditation to Latvia.”

This mission’s crucial task was to gather initial facts on the ground, liaise with local authorities, and ensure the interests of Ghana and the bereaved family were immediately represented.
Consequently, this direct engagement underscores our proactive approach to this tragedy.
Receiving Preliminary Reports and Awaiting Conclusions
Subsequently, the fact-finding mission has presented a preliminary report to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Accra.

This report forms a vital part of our understanding. The minister further said:
“Importantly, Latvian authorities have confirmed to our mission that their official investigations into the circumstances leading to the death of Nana Agyei Ahyia are ongoing and have not yet concluded. Therefore, we are monitoring the process closely while respecting the procedural timeline.”
Planning High-Level Diplomatic Engagement
To escalate Ghana’s direct involvement, I have formally notified the Latvian government of my decision to travel to Riga.
The purpose of this visit is to hold substantive talks with my Latvian counterpart and to engage directly with the investigators handling the case.

This high-level dialogue is essential to stress the importance Ghana places on a thorough and transparent process. Ultimately, every step is geared toward ensuring justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia.
Including the Family and Independent Experts
“Critically, my imminent official delegation to Latvia will include representatives of the family of Nana Agyei Ahyia.”
Their presence is indispensable to ensure the family’s perspectives are central to our discussions.

“Additionally, the Government of Ghana will independently engage external experts to rigorously analyze all investigative reports, particularly the expected final report from the Latvian authorities.
This independent analysis will definitively inform our next steps.”
A Firm Commitment to Transparency and Justice
The Government of Ghana, through the Foreign Ministry, is employing every necessary diplomatic and procedural channel.
“We are committed to a process that is transparent, thorough, and leaves no stone unturned.”

“Every action we are taking—from the initial fact-finding to the planned high-level talks and independent expert review—is driven by an unwavering objective: to secure justice for Nana Agyei Ahyia.
We stand resolutely with the family and assure the Ghanaian public of our steadfast dedication to this cause.”
