The Ghana Armed Forces has released a statement clarifying a shooting incident that claimed the lives of seven individuals at an AngloGold site in Obuasi.

According to the Public Relations Department of the Armed Forces, the shooting incident occurred on Saturday 18th January 2025 at 11pm.
The statement said a group of about 60 illegal miners breached a protected site belonging to AngloGold in order to gain access.

The group, wielding locally manufactured weapons, machetes and others then fired shots at the men in uniform authorized to protect the site. The situation prompted the military to return fire in self defense.
According to the military report, seven illegal miners died in the gunfire and one military officer who sustained gunshot wounds has been treated.
