Peter Nwachukwu, Husband of Nigerian gospel singer Osinachi, on Monday, April 28, was sentenced , to death by hanging.
Nwachukwu was found guilty of culpable homicide resulting in the death of the deceased (his wife) on April 8, 2022.
Peter was arrested on April 11, 2022, and later arraigned on 23 counts, including culpable homicide (punishable by death), spousal battery, child cruelty, and criminal intimidation
Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme of the FCT High Court, Abuja, ruled that the prosecution proved Peter’s guilt “beyond reasonable doubt.
He received Death by hanging for culpable homicide (Count 1). He also received prison terms (6 months to 3 years) and fines (totaling N700,000) for other charges.
Social Impact
The case sparked national outrage, highlighting religious stigma against divorce in Nigeria. Osinachi had reportedly stayed in the abusive marriage due to beliefs that “God is against divorce”.
It reignited calls for stronger domestic violence laws and accountability in religious institutions.
