Security Forces Arrest 53 Suspects Across Accra

Cybercrime : Following targeted raids in several key areas, Ghanaian security forces have successfully arrested 53 suspects linked to cybercrime networks.

Operations Follow Cyber Security Authority Intelligence

Firstly, based on intelligence from the Cyber Security Authority Ghana, coordinated operations took place on January 16 and 17, 2026.

The intelligence indicated that criminal networks were exploiting young men for cybercrime in East Legon Hills, Afienya, Kwabenya, Weija, and Tuba.

Minister Announces Arrests and Details Operation

Subsequently, the Minister for Communications, Digital Technology and Innovations, Mr. Sam George, officially announced these arrests in a Facebook post on Sunday, January 18, 2026.

He confirmed that officers from National Security Operations, the Cyber Security Authority, the CID Headquarters, and the National Police SWAT unit conducted the operation.

Suspects and Evidence Seized in Raids

Moreover, officials identified nine of those arrested as suspected ringleaders. They also rescued 44 others, who they believe were victims, from apartments where they were operating laptops. Critically, searches at the locations yielded significant evidence, including 52 mobile phones, 62 laptop computers, and two pump-action guns.

Breakdown of Arrests by Location

The arrests occurred across five specific locations:

  • East Legon Hills: 5 suspects

  • Afienya: 11 suspects

  • Kwabenya: 10 suspects

  • Weija: 10 suspects

  • Tuba: 17 suspects

Suspects in Custody for Further Investigation

Thereafter, authorities profiled all those arrested and handed them over to the Ghana Immigration Service for custody and further investigation.

Minister Issues Public Warning and Highlights Broader Efforts

In addition, Hon Sam George issued a caution to foreign nationals, advising them to verify invitations from compatriots before traveling to Ghana. He also noted that security agencies have profiled individuals from earlier operations with INTERPOL, handing some over to Nigerian law enforcement at the Seme border, while others now face prosecution in Ghanaian courts.

Finally, Mr. George stressed that protecting Ghana’s international cyber image is non-negotiable. Security agencies affirm that this operation is a key part of their ongoing efforts to curb cybercrime and safeguard the nation’s standing in the digital space.
