Accra’s largest second hand clothing market, Kantamanto was obliterated by fire in the first week of January 2025.

Over 30,00 shops were destroyed. Many traders lost their livelihoods as a result of the fire. Goods, properties and monies were lost due to the fire.

As of now, there is no clear cause of the fire. Speculations are that it was an arson attack. Others also say the overcrowding of the market coupled with numerous illegal electrical connections were major factors that caused the fire.
As investigations are still on going, the Ghana National Fire Service has not yet released an official statement as to the cause of the fire.

Meanwhile, shop owners and traders have began erecting new structures. So far many have laid the foundation for their shops with concrete. Wooden structured have also been mounted up to the roofing level
Considering the speed of the reconstruction work, the market may re-open in a few weeks.
