PRESS RELEASE
January 2, 2025
CALL FOR IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL OF CHIEF FIRE OFFICER
Accra, Ghana – The NDC Professionals Forum is outraged and deeply concerned about the gross incompetence displayed by the Ghana Fire Service in its handling of the recent fire outbreak at the Kantamanto Second Hand Market.
Located in the heart of Accra, the Kantamanto Market is a critical commercial hub that provides livelihoods for thousands of Ghanaians. The market’s central location makes it a high-risk area, and it is unacceptable that the Ghana Fire Service was not better prepared to respond to this emergency.
Despite the critical nature of their role, the Ghana Fire Service failed woefully in their response to the fire, resulting in the destruction of properties and livelihoods. This unacceptable failure demands accountability, and we are calling for the immediate dismissal of the Chief Fire Officer.
The NDC Professionals Forum believes that this failure is a clear indication of the ineptitude and lack of leadership within the Ghana Fire Service. It is unacceptable that despite repeated fire outbreaks in markets across the country, the Fire Service has not learned any lessons and has failed to develop effective strategies to prevent and respond to such disasters.
We demand that the Government takes immediate action to address this issue and ensure that those responsible for this failure are held accountable. The Chief Fire Officer must take responsibility for this failure and resign or be dismissed with immediate effect.
We also call on the Government to take urgent steps to provide support and compensation to the victims of the fire outbreak and to develop a comprehensive plan to prevent future occurrences.
Signed,
Amb. Sam Pee Yalley
National President, NDC Professionals Forum
