Ghana’s government is negotiating with the United States and Canada. These talks aim to ease visa processes for football fans. This follows the Black Stars’ qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, announced the new initiative. He revealed the high-level discussions in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
High-Level Meetings with US and Canada
Mr. Ablakwa held separate meetings with American and Canadian officials. The meetings took place on Tuesday. They focused on visa facilitation for traveling Ghanaian supporters.
The Ghanaian delegation included sports ministry and football association leaders. The American team was led by Acting US Ambassador Rolf Olson. Acting Canadian High Commissioner Dennis Roussel headed the Canadian delegation.
Creating Smoother Visa Procedures
The meetings aimed to build a shared understanding of visa expectations. They also worked to improve coordination between the nations. The goal is to create clear, efficient working arrangements for visas.
Discussions covered special visa provisions for fans and officials. These provisions will be separate from regular application channels.
Key Outcome: Multiple-Entry US Visas
A major outcome involves US visa rules. The recent lifting of US restrictions was confirmed. This change now allows for multiple-entry visas for Ghanaians.
This update enables fans to travel freely between host nations. They can visit the US, Canada, and Mexico during the tournament.
Future Talks and Tournament Details
Minister Ablakwa also plans a meeting with Mexican officials on Friday. The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be hosted jointly by the US, Canada, and Mexico. This is the first World Cup to be staged across three nations.
