The ruling NPP party lost massively in the Galamsey dominated constituencies during the 2024 parliamentary and presidential elections.

At the Joy News elections headquarters discussion, Samson Lardy Anyenini opined that the NPP in a bid to please the few who are engaged in Galamsey, ignored the cry of majority of voters scattered all over the country.  He said their main focus was to win the elections and not to protect the natural environment and water bodies.

The news crew espoused that it is interesting that in a bid to be silent on the Galamsey campaign, the government rather lost in those areas. The government rather thought remaining silent on the matter was a better option

Whiles Winston Amoah attempted to establish that the decision of Ghanaians cannot entirely depend on the issue of Galamsey, at least all in the studio unanimously agreed that the failure of the NPP government to fight illegal mining played a major role in the government’s defeat.

“In an attempt to protect their interest by not fighting Galamsey, they rather lost the elections”-Evans Mensah kept reiterating.

Raymond  Acquah, speaking on the show whiles venting his frustration on various attempts civil society had made to draw the attention of policy makers on proposed ways to curb the illegal mining menace said “the local economy in those areas is controlled by the Galamsey kingpins…the people who were supposed to fight the Galamsey were the ones who were opposing every proposal to stop Galamsey…they were protecting their interest, and protecting their own kingpins, they said the Galamsey areas were untouchable. In fact, those doing the Galamsey are not those in the pits,…they are the kingpins and they are untouchable”.

Evans Mensah said again “There must be ultimate consequences…the consequences are in the ballot boxes”.

The news crew all agreed that the posture of the NPP government towards fighting Galamsey was what caused it massive loss in the mining constituencies.
