Colombia President Backs Down Under US Pressure-Now Accepting Deportees

Hours after United States President Donald Trump threatened Colombia with high tariffs and visa restrictions for turning away US military aircraft transporting deported migrants,  the country’s president has rescinded his decision.

Earlier, President Gustavo Petro of Colombia had announced retaliatory tariffs on US imports and insisted his country would not accept migrants unless they were treated with “dignity and respect”

Donald Trump also ordered hard sanctions including 25 percent tariffs on all Colombia goods and visa restrictions government officials, their family members and supporters.

Later on Sunday, A White House statement said the South American country had now agreed to all of Trump’s terms including unrestricted acceptance of all illegal aliens from Colombia.

Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo through a late-night news conference said officials have overcome the impasse and would accept citizens deported from the US. Murillo also said the country would “continue to receive Colombians who return as deportees, guaranteeing them decent conditions, as citizens subject to rights”

Meanwhile, Petro’s presidential plane has been prepared to facilitate the return of the Colombians who would have arrived in the country earlier on the blocked military flights

According to the White House, Trump’s proposed tariffs however has been fully drafted and would still be implemented if Colombia does not honor the agreement.
