China Holds Lantern Festival Gala At The University of Ghana Sports Stadium

China has celebrated its Lantern Festival in Ghana. The festival took place on the 9th February 2025 at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium in Accra.

China’s Lantern Festival Gala marks the conclusion of the Chinese New Year celebrations. The event is to celebrate the traditional Chinese culture as well as mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Ghana and China.

President Mahama, compared Chinese customs to Ghanaian ideals of family and community, characterizing it as a symbol of “unity, renewal, and hope.”

President Mahama said further “The Lantern Festival is more than just a celebration; it is a symbol of enlightenment, unity, and progress. The act of lighting and releasing lanterns into the sky represents the collective aspirations for peace, prosperity, and a brighter future”

Urging the Chinese community to invest in Ghana, President Mahama again said. “Ghana is open for business again,…As we move forward, we must continue to embrace mutual respect and ensure that the benefits of our partnership are shared by all.

The Lantern Festival, sometimes called the Spring Lantern Festival, is a Chinese holiday observed on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar Chinese calendar. It originated from the customary Chinese New Year celebrations. The traditional Chinese New Year celebrations come to an end on this day. It has grown to be China’s most well-liked lantern festival and light show.
