The Ghana Police Service has issued an update on its investigation into the violent incidents that marred the Ablekuma North Parliamentary re-run election held on July 11, 2025.
In a press release dated July 17, the Accra Regional Police Command confirmed that it is reviewing video footage from polling stations to identify perpetrators of assaults and other misconduct. The police have also begun gathering statements from complainants and witnesses, emphasizing their commitment to holding all offenders accountable, including a police officer who was captured assaulting a journalist. The officer has since been interdicted and faces criminal charges.
The police assured the public that arrests are imminent, citing “vital leads” in their investigations. Victims of the violence have been provided with Medical Report Forms to document their injuries, underscoring the seriousness with which authorities are treating the matter. The press release reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance toward election-related violence, intimidation, or misconduct, urging the public to cooperate by sharing credible information through emergency numbers 18555 or 191.
This development highlights the Ghana Police Service’s efforts to restore public confidence following the chaotic re-run election. By taking swift action against both civilians and law enforcement personnel involved in the violence, the police aim to uphold the rule of law and ensure future elections are conducted peacefully.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of accountability and transparency in maintaining electoral integrity in Ghana.
