“Honorary Titles End At The Ceremony” -GTEC Cracks Down on Misuse of Honorary ‘Dr’ and ‘Prof’ Titles-VIDEO
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has raised concerns over the growing misuse of honorary doctorate and professorship titles, warning that such practices dilute the integrity of Ghana’s academic space.
In an interview with Daily Graphic, Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, Director-General of GTEC, emphasized that honorary titles conferred during ceremonies should not be used as prefixes to names or carried beyond the event. He stated that these titles are purely ceremonial and do not equate to earned academic qualifications.
Prof. Jinapor further clarified that GTEC, under the Education Regulatory Bodies Act, has the mandate to regulate and crack down on individuals who falsely present themselves with unearned titles.
The move aims to uphold academic standards and prevent the misrepresentation of qualifications in professional and public spheres. GTEC’s stance has sparked discussions on the ethical use of honorary awards, with many supporting stricter enforcement to preserve the credibility of Ghana’s higher education system.
