Azerbaijan Protests to Iran After Drones Strike Near Airport, Injuring Two

Azerbaijan has formally protested to Iran. It accuses Tehran of launching drone strikes that injured two people.

Drones launched from Iran struck the Azerbaijani exclave of Nakhchivan on Thursday. The attack triggered fires near Nakhchivan International Airport.

It happened around noon, according to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry. One drone struck the airport terminal building. Another drone landed near a school in Shekarabad village.

Video footage captured thick black smoke rising. It rose close to the airport, just 10 kilometers from Iran. The footage also revealed damage to the terminal’s skylight.

Consequently, the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry issued a strong condemnation. “We strongly condemn these drone attacks,” the ministry declared in a statement.

It confirmed the attacks injured two civilians. It also confirmed they damaged the airport building. Furthermore, the ministry called the attacks a violation of international law. It also warned they escalate regional tensions significantly.

As a result, Baku summoned the Iranian ambassador immediately. Mojtaba Dermichilu received a formal note of protest. “A strong protest will be expressed to the Iranian side,” the ministry stated.

Officials demanded that Iran urgently clarify the matter. Additionally, they insisted Tehran take preventive measures because they want to stop such incidents from recurring in the future.

Moreover, Azerbaijan has said it reserves its right to respond. The government warned it will take “appropriate response measures”  to act if such attacks occur again.

Therefore, a diplomatic dispute now escalates between the neighboring nations. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan anxiously awaits an official explanation from the Islamic Republic. Ultimately, the incident threatens to further destabilize the volatile region.
