Anti-Illegal Mining Operative Injured in Violent Bono Region Clash

A government task force operation turned violent on Tuesday when illegal miners opened fire on officials in the Bono Region.

Unfortunately, a member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) sustained a gunshot injury during a fierce exchange.

The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources confirmed the serious incident in a press statement issued Tuesday night.

According to the Ministry, the confrontation occurred in a bush along the Subinkurom-Kyeremasu stretch within the Dormaa Central Municipality.

Armed Thugs Ambush NAIMOS Task Force

The Ministry detailed that the NAIMOS task force faced a dangerous ambush during its operation. Specifically, “armed thugs, who were hiding in the bushes, opened fire on sighting the NAIMOS task force.”

This unprovoked attack immediately precipitated a defensive response.

“This led to an exchange of gunfire, during which one NAIMOS personnel sustained a gunshot injury,”

the official statement added. The injured officer received prompt medical attention following the confrontation.

One Assailant Killed in Exchange

The return fire from the task force during the engagement proved fatal for one of the attackers. Officials identified the deceased assailant as Abuu Ibrahim.

Subsequently, medical personnel pronounced Ibrahim dead upon his arrival at the St. Matthew Catholic Hospital. This outcome highlights the severe and often dangerous realities facing anti-illegal mining units as they combat well-armed and organized groups.

Government Continues Crackdown on Illegal Mining

This violent incident underscores the persistent challenges and risks inherent in Ghana’s ongoing fight against illegal mining, commonly known as “galamsey.”

The NAIMOS task force, operating under the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, routinely conducts such high-risk operations to protect the nation’s natural resources and environment.

Furthermore, the government remains steadfast in its commitment to curbing this destructive activity, despite facing armed resistance. The Ministry’s statement reinforces the operational dangers while affirming the continued dedication to the mission.

The condition of the injured NAIMOS officer and the details of any arrests made during the operation are currently undisclosed.

Authorities are expected to continue their investigation into the attack and pursue all individuals involved in the ambush.
