The Brown University shooting erupted on the second day of final examinations. Initially, university officials informed students and staff that police had a suspect in custody.

Deputy Police Chief Timothy O’Hara described the suspect as a male in dark clothing who was last seen fleeing the engineering building where the attack began.

Following the Brown University shooting, Mayor Brett Smiley activated a shelter-in-place order for the area. He urgently advised residents near campus to stay indoors.
“We have all available resources to find the suspect,” Smiley stated. Meanwhile, the eight wounded victims are in critical but stable condition. The mayor declined to confirm whether the victims were students, highlighting the fluidity of the investigation.
Eyewitness Accounts from the Brown University Shooting Scene
The violence centered near the Barus & Holley building, which houses the School of Engineering. Alex Bruce, a senior biochemistry student, was working in his dorm across the street when he heard sirens.
“I’m just in here shaking,” he said, watching armed officers surround his building. In a nearby lab, doctoral student Chiangheng Chien reported that his peers hid under desks and turned off the lights after receiving the active shooter alert.
Police subsequently warned media personnel to take cover in their vehicles, underscoring the ongoing danger.
Ongoing Manhunt and National Response
For over three hours after the Brown University shooting, officers meticulously searched campus buildings and trash cans.
Mayor Smiley noted that one person was briefly detained but later released after being cleared. Providence Councilmember John Goncalves, a Brown alumnus, expressed his heartbreak for the community.
