The Duchess and Duke of Kent had three children, but they also experienced the tragic loss of a son, who was stillborn in 1977.

Following that loss, she entered a period of intense emotional turmoil. For example, she spent seven weeks in the hospital for what officials called “nervous exhaustion.” It is important to remember that this was an era with far less openness about mental health. Later on, she bravely revealed that she had actually suffered from “acute depression.”

Love For Music And Teaching Children

Throughout her life, music played a very important role. She often spoke about how deeply music moved her, both as a listener and as a musician who sang in the Bach Choir. Interestingly, her musical tastes were very eclectic. For instance, she chose a piece by Mozart as her favorite on Desert Island Discs, but she also later expressed a liking for gangsta rap.

In her later years, she made the decision to step back from her royal title. Instead, she focused her energy on improving music education for young people. Starting in the mid-1990s, she began living a double life. She worked as a part-time music teacher at a primary school in Hull under the name “Mrs. Kent.” Remarkably, the parents and pupils there did not know about her royal background.

While teaching, she saw how deprivation trapped talented children. She once described some neighborhoods as having “Berlin Walls around them.” As a result, she set up a charity to help young people get access to musical instruments.

She strongly believed in the “power of music to give confidence and self-belief.” Reflecting on her time teaching, she said, “My connection will always be there. I love those children, I love East Hull. I wouldn’t have stayed there for 13 years if I hadn’t.”

She is survived by her husband, the 89-year-old Duke of Kent, and their two sons and one daughter.
