For nearly two decades, the Computerized School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) has promised a seamless transition for Junior High School graduates in Ghana.

This CSSPS was designed to eliminate manual, biased processes, thereby ensuring fairness and efficiency. Its core mission has always been to simplify the complex procedure for all stakeholders, from students and parents to school administrators. Initially, many greeted this automated solution with optimism and relief.

The Promise of a Streamlined Process

The CSSPS operates on a seemingly straightforward principle. First, students select their preferred senior high schools, and the school placement system automatically assigns them based on their exam performance and available space. Furthermore, the process ideally considers the student’s residential location, finally aiming to place them in schools within their region or city. Consequently, this should minimize familial disruption and maintain the crucial support network of parental care during these formative years.

A Reality Marred by Inexplicable Placements

However, the reality on the ground now tells a different, more distressing story. Every year, the very school placement system intended to prevent chaos seems to generate it. Recently, numerous cases have emerged that defy logical explanation.

For instance, consider a 14-year-old girl who lives with her parents in Weija, Accra. The system shockingly posted her to Mamfe Senior High School as a day student. This placement immediately created an impossible situation for her family.

Following this bewildering assignment, her parents exhausted all avenues to secure a boarding facility for her. Unfortunately, the school authorities firmly stated they could not offer her a boarding space.

As a result, her parents now face a heartbreaking dilemma. They must either rent a separate apartment for their young daughter in Mamfe, depriving her of essential parental guidance, or navigate a daunting appeals process. This scenario starkly highlights how a single error in the school placement system can trigger a cascade of personal and financial crises.

Unfortunately, this is not an isolated incident. Another young female student from Bortianor, Accra, received a similar baffling posting—this time to the Volta Region, also as a day student. Logically, her placement hundreds of kilometers away from her home and family is untenable. Therefore, her parents also confront the same stressful task of finding alternative accommodation for their child in an unfamiliar region. These cases powerfully illustrate a systemic failure that transcends individual inconvenience.

Eroding Trust in a Once-Trusted System

Transitioning from these specific examples to the broader picture, the cumulative effect of these errors is a significant erosion of public trust. Consequently, the CSSPS, once touted as a product trusted by parents nationwide for accurate and fair placements, is rapidly becoming a primary source of anxiety and frustration. As a result, the gap between its promised efficiency and the lived experience of families is widening alarmingly with each new academic year

The Urgent Need for Transparency and Reform

Undeniably, there is a pressing need for a thorough review and reform of the school placement system. Stakeholders are urgently calling for greater transparency in the algorithm’s decision-making process.

Parents and educators rightly demand to understand how these geographically and logistically nonsensical placements occur. Addressing these flaws is not merely about fixing software; it is about restoring faith in a critical public service.

While automation offers incredible benefits, it must serve humanity, not complicate it. The current challenges with the CSSPS demonstrate that a system requires more than just technical efficiency; it  may need a layer of human oversight and common sense.

Finally, for the sake of Ghana’s future leaders, it is imperative that the authorities act decisively to refine this process. This would ensure it truly delivers on its original promise of convenience, fairness, and care for every student and parent.
