The son of Prophet Salifu Amoako has been sentenced to six months. The 16 year old was accused of killing two passengers at East Legon due to reckless driving.
The court presided over by Judge Bernice Mensimah Ackon gave the verdict and conviction.
The case was handled by the Family and Juvenile Court in Accra. The 16 year old son of the prophet will serve his sentence at the Senior Correctional Centre.
The accused was charged with eight counts which included: manslaughter, dangerous driving, and driving without a license, negligently causing harm. He pleaded not guilty to all those charges. The accused later however pleaded guilty to the charges.
Most Ghanaians have been following the developments of the story keenly. Hence will express some disappointments over the seemingly short sentences that does not commensurate the level of offence.
Many may reason that for someone whose action has caused so much devastation should perhaps receive a harsher sentence.
However, according to the Juvenile Justice Act 2003 (Act 653), the maximum sentence for a juvenile is six months. This Act applies to a juvenile who has been charged with manslaughter.
In addition to paying for the damage caused by the accident up to an amount of GHC8,000, the parents of the accused were find an amount of GHC12,000 for their inability to keep their child under control.
