Controversial Ghanaian politician Kennedy Agyapong has once again stirred reactions with his humorous remarks about the past life of popular Christian leader Archbishop Charles Agyin- Asare.
Speaking openly, Kennedy Agyapong revealed that he and the prophet were classmates in their youth and jokingly claimed that the man of God was once an “ardent weed smoker.”
The former lawmaker admitted that his wife had warned him against discussing the religious leader’s past, but he proceeded anyway—though in a lighthearted manner. Surprisingly, members of the prophet’s church responded with laughter, suggesting they saw Agyapong’s comments as playful banter between old classmates rather than a serious accusation.
Agyapong humorously compared Archbishop Asare’s transformation to the biblical story of Saul, who became the Apostle Paul after a dramatic conversion.
“I have noticed that for someone to be a proper man of God, he must have been an ardent weed smoker in the past,” he quipped, drawing laughter from the audience. Despite the jest, the politician also acknowledged the prophet’s intelligence, stating, “He was very smart and intelligent in class.”
Agyin-Asare, the founder of Word Miracle Church International in Tamale, in Ghana’s Northern Region and later Perez Chapel International, Accra, is a well-known figure in Ghana’s Christian community, respected for his prophetic ministry. While Agyapong’s comments were taken lightly by the leaders followers, they highlight the fine line between humor and respect when discussing a spiritual leader’s background.
The incident serves as a reminder that even in jest, public statements about influential figures can generate both amusement and debate. For now, it seems the prophet and his congregation have chosen to laugh it off, focusing instead on his present-day impact rather than his youthful past.
