The President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has today tasked the IGP and Police Service to investigate election related deaths.
The instruction was contained In a statement released on 10th January, 2025 form the office of the president. Ghana’s leader directly tasked the IGP to investigate those deaths. The deaths as the statement pointed out occurred during the 2020 and 2024 general elections. The statement further espoused that a total of 8 Ghanaian citizens died during those elections. Those deaths occurred in different parts of the country.
The following conditions were proposed in order to ensure that investigations are comprehensive and transparent.: Establishment of a Dedicated Investigative Taskforce, Collaboration with Witnesses and Families, Review of Electoral Security Arrangements, Use of Forensic Evidence and Collaboration with Electoral and Civic Bodies.
The statement that was signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama finally advised the Ghana Police service to give periodic updates on investigations in order to gain public trust.
