PRESS STATEMENT

DEMOLITION OF THE STATUE HONORING FORMER PRESIDENT NANA ADDO DANKWA AKUFO-ADDO

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is shocked and dismayed by the demolition of the statue erected to honor His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, former President of the Republic of Ghana, in the Western Region.

The statue was erected by the chiefs and people of the Western Region in appreciation for the massive transformative developmental projects delivered to the Region under his leadership. It was to serve as a reminder for the numerous achievements that have significantly improved the quality of life and infrastructure in the Region, which include:

Health Sector Projects

8. 26 Astro Turf Projects Across the Region

9. One-million-container Terminal at Takoradi Port

10. Seven operational factories under the One District, One Factory (1D1F) initiative

The demolition of the statue is therefore not only an attack on the memory of the only President in the 4th Republic who has shown great interest in the development of the Western Region but also an insult to the chiefs and people of the Region, who decided to acknowledge and celebrate these developments.

We unequivocally condemn this barbaric act and call on the Ghana Police Service to launch an immediate investigation to identify and apprehend the perpetrators. We urge them to ensure that justice is served swiftly so that such acts of vandalism and lawlessness are deterred in the future.

We also call on civil society organizations, the National Peace Council, and religious leaders to speak out against this act of lawlessness. We therefore request the current administration to publicly denounce this act and support efforts to bring the culprits to book.

The NPP remains confident in the ability of our security agencies to uphold the rule of law and protect the symbols that represent progress, development, and unity in our nation. We will continue to advocate for respect for our leaders and the preservation of our collective achievements as a nation.
