Organ Transplant In Ghana

Organ Transplant In Ghana – In a bid to improve Ghana’s health sector, CEO of Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam has asked Government to legislated organ transplant.

The CEO said such a move by Government will reduce cost of surgery. Currently, organs like corneas are imported from overseas at a cost of $3,000 to $5,000. However, if harvested locally in Ghana, the same organ would cost only 500 Ghana cedis..  This Dr Seidu said will benefit the patient

He further stated that in Ghana, when patients desire to do Kidney transplant, the only option is to travel to India, America or the U.K. This is Irrespective of the fact that the country has capable surgeons to undertake the surgery. They are however unable to due to limited legislation in that filed.

So far, there has not been any feedback from major stakeholders. The Government, Ministry of health and Ghana Health Service are yet to respond to this request.
