Helicopter Tragedy Leads to NPP Political Withdrawal

1. Historic Decision by NPPThe New Patriotic Party (NPP) has made a surprising announcement. They will not participate in the Tamale Central parliamentary by-election. This decision comes after the tragic death of MP Alhaji Hon. Dr. Murtala Mohammed. He died in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, along with seven others.

2. Reason Behind the NPP Withdrawal From Tamale

On August 11, 2025, the NPP’s National Steering Committee met at their headquarters. After careful discussion, they chose not to contest the election. They cited Article 10(10)(1) of their party constitution as the basis for this move. The party believes this decision respects the memory of the late MP.

3. Avoiding National Division

The NPP explained their reasoning clearly citing that they want to prevent further polarization in Ghana. By-elections often create tension between political parties hence NPP feels now is not the time for such conflicts. They called competitive elections “inhumane” during this period of mourning.

4. Honoring the Deceased

Instead of focusing on elections, the NPP wants to honor the victims. They specifically mentioned continuing the fight against illegal mining (galamsey) whiles the party believes this would be a better tribute. They also want a peaceful transition for Tamale Central constituents.

5. Electoral Commission’s Role

The Electoral Commission will still open nominations as required by law. However, the NPP has decided not to submit any candidates. This is despite Article 112(5) of Ghana’s constitution allowing the process. The party prioritizes national unity over political gains.

6. Reaction from Political Analysts
Many experts see this as a rare move in Ghanaian politics. Typically, parties compete fiercely for every available seat. The NPP’s decision shows unusual restraint. Some analysts praise it as a mature approach during national tragedy.

7. What This Means for Tamale Central
Residents of Tamale Central will still get a new MP because other parties may still contest the seat. However, without NPP participation, the race dynamics change completely. This could lead to a less contentious election process.

8. Looking to the Future
The NPP’s General Secretary, Justin Kodua Frimpong, signed the statement. He emphasized putting Ghana first during difficult times. This decision may set a new precedent for how parties handle similar situations. The nation now watches how other groups and the ruling NDC will respond.
