Aljazeera has reported that Healthcare in Nigeria is in dire straits due to shortage of medical staff.

The country has witnessed the rise of Doctor and nurse exodus to countries like U.K, U.S and Canada. Around 16,000 doctors left for these countries between 2016 and 2022.

Coupled with the exodus of Doctors, 42,000 members of the nurses and midwifery association have also left the country for greener pastures.

Low wages and a lack of medical equipment have been identified as the major cause of the problem.

This, experts say has created a huge healthcare crisis in the country.

Chief medical directors have warned that hospitals may soon run out of staff.

This has led to the Doctor to patient ratio at 1 to 10,000. This is significantly lower than the W.H.O recommended 1 to 600.

Meanwhile, Local medical association say the shortage of trained personnel has resulted in several deaths and missed diagnosis. The Government says it is tackling the crisis by focusing on training.
