NDC Grassroots Accuse Government of Sponsoring Nana Aba’s London Event
Some grassroots supporters of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) have accused the government and party leadership of sponsoring Nana Aba Asamoah’s “Woman of Velour” empowerment project.

The critics claim the government neglects the basic needs of Ghanaians. They allege officials rather spend on lavish displays of wealth that offer little benefit to ordinary citizens .
GoldBod at Center of Controversy
The headline sponsor “GoldBod” became the focal point of these accusations . Party supporters questioned why a state-linked institution would support a private event abroad.

Many Ghanaians on social media criticized the decision. They argued public resources should address pressing local needs instead .
However, GoldBod Jewellery Limited quickly clarified its position. The company explained it did not provide financial sponsorship for the event .
A subsidiary of the Ghana Gold Board, the company offered only promotional discounts. These discounts applied to jewellery purchases for event participants during Ghana Heritage Month .
“The company did not contribute funds toward the organisation of the event,” GoldBod stated on social media platform XÂ .
Grassroots Feel Sidelined
Of particular concern to party grassroots members is the neglect of loyal foot soldiers. They feel overlooked while the government supports Nana Aba, who previously opposed the NDC.
Central Regional Communications Officer Gabriella Tetteh has called for urgent reforms. She warns that lack of transparency in appointments is alienating loyal supporters.

Deputy National Organizer Elikem Kotoko confirmed the mounting discontent. “Indeed, the grassroots are not happy and they are justified,” he stated on Facebook.
Many NDC supporters recall Nana Aba’s vocal opposition during the 2024 elections. They accuse her of campaigning against President John Mahama while the party was in opposition.
Program Draws International Attention
The Women of Valour program held its 2025 edition in Paris. This year’s event took place in London on March 7 at the Hilton on Park Lane.

Founded by award-winning broadcast journalist Nana Aba Anamoah, the initiative celebrates women who overcome significant challenges. It brings together women from diverse backgrounds to share stories of courage and resilience .
This year’s attendance included Nana Ama McBrown, Serwaa Amihere, and Ghana’s High Commissioner to the UK, Zita Sahab Benson .
Company Defends Partnership
GoldBod Jewellery Managing Director Gertrude Emefa Donkor issued a statement clarifying the company’s role. The involvement was purely promotional and not financial sponsorship .

“GoldBod Jewellery Limited offered discounts on jewellery purchases to participants of the programme,” the company explained. This formed part of their ongoing Ghana Heritage Month promotions .
The company stressed its focus on manufacturing and retailing authentic Ghanaian gold ornaments. It serves both local and international customers .
Debate Continues Online
Despite the clarification, discussions continue across digital platforms. Many social media users call for clearer guidelines on how state-affiliated organizations engage with external programs .
Some commentators reject GoldBod’s explanation entirely. Political commentator P.K. Sarpong questioned the plausibility of the discount-only partnership .
Others defend the initiative, insisting it remains a private empowerment project. They argue collaborations with brands are common in event promotion .
Nana Aba Responds to Critics
The broadcaster has broken her silence on the online controversy. She expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for discussing the event widely on social media .
“Thank you so much for discussing my event widely. I love free publicity. Thank you,” she posted on X.
Supporters of the Women of Valour initiative continue to defend the partnership. They maintain the program’s goal of highlighting inspiring women should remain the focus, not political sensitivities.

The controversy illustrates how corporate partnerships can quickly become entangled in Ghana’s highly charged political environment
