MTN Finally Abolishes E-Levy

Following the implementation of new tax changes by the government, MTN Ghana has formally stopped deducting the one percent Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy) from all mobile money (MoMo) transactions.

This was done however by a “little drama” by the CEO of MTN Ghana.

Stephen Blewett, the CEO of MTN Ghana, addressed concerns at MTN House in Accra on April 2, stressing that although the government had authorized the repeal, telecom companies needed to follow the rules before halting deductions.

The CEO said “I can’t abolish E-Levy until I’m told to do it. If I do it ahead of time, the Bank of Ghana will catch me. So we have a process that has to be followed, and we will follow that process”

Public questions concerning the implementation schedule were raised by the elimination of the E-Levy.

The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) instructed all charging organizations to immediately cease deducting the one percent fee after the president signed the Electronic Transfer fee (Repeal) Bill, 2025.

Organizations were also instructed by the GRA to refund to tax payers monies that have been deducted after the announcement of the E-Levy abolishment.
