Korle Bu Teaching Hospital confirms free dialysis for all NHIS cardholders.
Korle-Bu Free Dialysis : In a move that brings hope to many Ghanaian families, the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has officially announced that dialysis treatment is now completely free for all patients with a valid National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) card.
This long-awaited update addresses the growing concerns around the high cost of this life-saving treatment and offers real relief to those who need it most.
Tackling a Pressing Public Concern
The announcement came during a session with Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC), where serious questions had been raised about the accessibility and affordability of dialysis at Ghana’s leading teaching hospital.
Chaired by Abena Osei Asare, the committee pushed for clarity and accountability — and the hospital responded.

A Clear and Reassuring Commitment
On Monday, September 29, Dr. Yakubu Seidu Adam, the Acting CEO of KBTH, gave a firm and heartfelt assurance during the committee meeting:

“Madam Chair, honestly now, like you mentioned, it’s difficult, but we are giving the service for free to anybody who has a National Health Insurance Card at hand,” he said.
He repeated the assurance to leave no room for doubt:
“Once you come and show your National Health Insurance card, and you have gone through the process, they give you the treatment for free. You don’t pay anything at all.”
It was a statement that many patients and their families have long hoped to hear.
What This Means for Patients and Their Loved Ones
For anyone battling kidney disease, dialysis is not optional — it’s essential, ongoing, and expensive. As a result, the financial strain has often been overwhelming for families.
However, with this new policy, the path to treatment is clear. From now on, patients will simply present a valid NHIS card, complete the necessary medical checks, and consequently receive dialysis at no cost.
This isn’t just a policy shift — it’s a lifeline. Hence, it means fewer missed treatments, less financial stress, and a better chance at long-term health for countless Ghanaians.
A Big Step Towards Universal Health Coverage
Korle Bu’s decision is more than just good news for patients — it’s a major stride toward universal healthcare access in Ghana. By bringing dialysis under the NHIS umbrella, the hospital is showing that public health comes before profit.
It also sends a powerful message to other healthcare institutions: affordable, life-saving care is possible — and necessary.
