Ghana Files Formal Protest with UN After Attack on Peacekeepers in Lebanon, Demands Immediate Probe
Ghana Officially Protests To U.N – Ghana has formally protested to the UN after a violent attack on its UNIFIL soldiers in Lebanon. The government demands an immediate, transparent investigation and justice for the injured peacekeepers.
The Ghanaian government lodged a formal protest with the UN. Consequently, it condemned the violent attack on its peacekeepers. Two soldiers were seriously injured in the incident. Furthermore, the attack has drawn widespread international condemnation.
Attack on Ghanaian Troops Triggers Diplomatic Response
The attack occurred on March 6, 2026, targeting the Ghanaian Battalion serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
This occurred in the southern part of the country. Consequently, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, acting on behalf of the Ghanaian government, escalated the matter directly to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Government Demands Full and Transparent Investigation
In the official protest letter dated March 6, the Government of Ghana has called for a full, immediate, impartial, and transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault.
Furthermore, Ghana is demanding that those responsible for this grave violation be swiftly identified and held accountable.
Accra Describes Assault as a ‘War Crime’
Ghana strongly condemns this attack, describing it as a “war crime” and a direct affront to the protections legally afforded to United Nations peacekeeping personnel.
After all, these soldiers are deployed at great personal risk explicitly in the service of international peace and security.
Urgent Call for Enhanced Safety Measures
The government urged the UN to ensure the safety of its Ghanaian contingent. It stressed that broader protective measures are essential.
Accra insists all UNIFIL personnel, who risk their lives daily, must receive enhanced protection. Their sacrifice for humanity demands it.
Ghana Reaffirms Commitment to UN Operations
The government has assured its gallant soldiers that no effort shall be spared in pursuing justice. Moreover, Ghana has reaffirmed its unwavering and longstanding commitment to UN peacekeeping operations. The country has also however asserted that the safety of peacekeepers must always remain paramount.
Ongoing Engagement with UN Authorities
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated it will continue to monitor developments closely. As a result, they will remain actively engaged with the relevant United Nations authorities until a satisfactory resolution is achieved.
