Ghana Initiates Diplomatic Push for Citizen’s Freedom
The Government of Ghana has commenced urgent diplomatic negotiations with Ukraine to secure the release of a Ghanaian national being held as a prisoner of war.

High-level talks are now underway following an official notification from the Ukrainian government regarding the arrest.
Verification and Evidence Confirm Involvement
Authorities have successfully verified the identity of the detained individual. Importantly, available evidence reveals that the Ghanaian arrived in Moscow, Russia, on July 7, 2024.

Official records indicate he subsequently signed a contract to join the Russian military’s 2nd Assault Company of the 71st Motorized Rifle Regiment. Furthermore, he reportedly participated in hostilities in the Zaporizhzhia direction before his capture by Ukrainian forces.
High-Level Meeting with Ukrainian Ambassador
In a significant diplomatic move, Ghana’s Foreign Minister held a direct meeting yesterday with the Acting Ambassador of Ukraine to Ghana, Ivan Lukachuk.

During this critical discussion, the Minister formally appealed for the release and repatriation of the citizen to Ghana. Additionally, a special message has been sent directly to Kyiv, underscoring the urgency of Ghana’s request.

Ghana Objects to Prisoner Exchange, Citing Safety Concerns
Notably, Ghana has strongly objected to any potential inclusion of its national in a prisoners-of-war exchange between Ukraine and Russia. The government firmly believes such a transfer could make him even more vulnerable and complicate rescue efforts.
Leveraging Diplomacy and Peace Advocacy for a Solution
The government remains hopeful that its intense diplomatic efforts will yield the expected results.

By leveraging Ghana’s cordial relations with Ukraine and its longstanding, strong advocacy for global peace and a cessation of the conflict, officials are striving for a positive outcome.
A Grave Warning to Ghana’s Youth
The Foreign Minister also issued a passionate appeal to the youth of Ghana. He urged them to be acutely alert to the clandestine modus operandi of criminal recruitment and human trafficking networks. These groups often operate through the dark web. “Please do not fall prey,” he urged. “It is extremely dangerous to get involved in any conflict. You can be killed or captured.”
The Mahama Administration’s Commitment to Citizen Welfare
Finally, the foreign Minister reiterated and reaffirmed Government’s unwavering dedication to prioritizing the welfare of all Ghanaians abroad.
