The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced urgent safety measures following violent attacks on three senior high schools—Bawku SHS, Nalerigu SHS, and Zuarungu SHS—between 20th and 26th July 2025.
The incidents resulted in fatalities, injuries, and property damage, prompting the temporary closure of the affected schools. In a press release dated 29th July 2025, the GES condemned the violence and extended condolences to bereaved families, while assuring support for traumatized students and staff. The closure aims to safeguard lives and allow for thorough security assessments before academic activities resume.
To mitigate disruptions, the GES is collaborating with the Ministry of Education, WAEC, and regional authorities to ensure SHS 3 students can safely sit for the upcoming WASSCE examinations. Special arrangements, including secure exam centers, are being prioritized. Meanwhile, SHS 1 and 2 students will receive alternative learning support, with details to be communicated later. The GES is also bolstering counselling services to help victims cope with trauma, emphasizing mental health alongside physical safety.
The statement commended the government and security agencies for swiftly evacuating students and pledged continued cooperation to enhance school security. Parents, community leaders, and law enforcement were urged to unite in protecting educational institutions. The GES stressed the need for collective vigilance to restore calm and uphold the integrity of Ghana’s schools.
Signed by Daniel Fenyi, Head of Public Relations, the release underscores the GES’s commitment to balancing safety with academic continuity. As investigations and recovery efforts unfold, stakeholders await further updates on reopening timelines and long-term security strategies to prevent future tragedies.
