The Government of Ghana is significantly stepping up its approach from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in Bawku and other affected areas, in response to a recent escalation of violence that threatens to derail the peacebuilding process.

In a press statement from the Presidency Communications, dated Sunday, July 27, 2025, and signed by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, MP, Spokesperson to the President and Minister, Government Communications, it was announced that the Ghana Armed Forces have been deployed to maintain law and order, and curfews will be intensified to ensure public safety. The government assures the public that the Armed Forces will take all necessary measures to protect lives and property.

The statement also commends His Majesty Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for his mediation efforts in the conflict, and appreciates all stakeholders supporting the peace process. It highlights that the Otumfuo’s mediation, alongside genuine help from Nayiri and Zugraana, had nearly brought an end to the conflict until the very recent killings necessitated drastic actions to protect all in the interests of the greater good.

While acknowledging that the peace enforcement intervention may cause inconvenience to peace-loving people, the government remains fully committed to restoring peace and stability in Bawku and other affected areas, taking every necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all residents, including students.
