Ga Mantse Halts Planned Igbo Yam Festival in Accra, Ghana Citing Security Concerns

In a decisive move to preserve regional peace, Ga Mantse Nii Tackie Teiko Tsuru II has ordered the immediate suspension of a planned Igbo Yam Festival. Consequently, the event, organized by Igbo leader HRM Eze Dr. Amb. Chukwudi Jude Ihenetu, will not proceed as scheduled for Sunday, September 21, 2025, at the El-Wak Stadium in Accra.

This directive follows an official complaint from the Ga Traditional Council to the Regional Police Commander. The Council expressed deep concern over flyers circulating on social media promoting the “2025 Hog Day in Ghana/New Yam Festival.” Moreover, they firmly stated that allowing the event to continue could “possibly cause mayhem and disturbance of peace and security within the Ga State.”

A Repeated Breach of Protocol

This is not the first time the Ga Traditional Council has addressed this issue. Importantly, they referenced an earlier press release dated July 9, 2025, which specifically cautioned Eze Ihenetu. In that document, the Council explicitly instructed him to “desist from all traditional and cultural festivities under the guise of importing Igbo culture into the Ga State.”

The Council views such activities as a significant breach of local tradition and protocol. Therefore, they see the planned festival not as a cultural celebration but as an unauthorized importation of foreign traditions that could disrupt the social fabric of the region.

An Official Appeal to Law Enforcement

The Ga Traditional Council’s Registrar, Evelyn Amewotse, wrote to the Ghana Police Service. She acted on King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II’s direct orders. The letter urgently requests the police halt the program immediately.

The Council also submitted the event flyer and a press release. They provided these to support their request for intervention. The Council now counts on the security services’ cooperation. They expect enforcement of this directive.

The Underlying Tensions and the Path Forward

This incident highlights the delicate balance between cultural expression and respect for host traditions. While cultural diversity is a hallmark of modern society, the Ga Traditional Council’s actions underscore the importance of adhering to local governance and protocols.

Ultimately, the priority for the Ga Traditional Council is the maintenance of law and order. The suspension of the Igbo Yam Festival is presented as a necessary step to prevent any potential public unrest. For now, the planned celebration remains indefinitely postponed, pending further developments and dialogue between the involved parties.
