Shatta Wale Released on Reduced Bail by EOCO

Dancehall artiste Charles Nii Armah Mensah, popularly known as Shatta Wale, has officially been released from custody after successfully meeting revised bail conditions set by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

Importantly, the agency significantly reduced the initial bail figure from a staggering GH¢10 million to GH¢5 million, albeit still requiring two substantial sureties. Consequently, by approximately 6:30 pm on Wednesday, Shatta Wale secured his freedom and departed the EOCO offices.

Earlier in the day, EOCO had issued a formal statement clarifying his status. They confirmed that the musician remained in custody pending the provision and verification of the sureties. Specifically, the agency emphasized that properties presented by the sureties would undergo rigorous scrutiny to ensure their value was commensurate with the bail amount. This verification process is a standard protocol to guarantee compliance with the court’s requirements.

The Core of the Investigation: A Luxury Vehicle

The entire situation stems from a high-profile investigation into the purchase of a Lamborghini Urus. EOCO invited Shatta Wale to their offices on Wednesday, August 20, to assist with their inquiries. Subsequently, the investigation revolves around the vehicle’s alleged connection to a massive US$4 million crime. Central to the case is Nana Kwabena Amuah, a Ghanaian national currently serving a prison sentence in the United States for his role in the financial scheme.

Key Findings from the Interrogation

According to the official EOCO statement, the interrogation session lasted nearly four hours. However, a critical issue emerged during questioning: Shatta Wale was unable to identify the seller of the luxury vehicle. Instead, he reportedly claimed that he acquired it from the “street.” Furthermore, he mentioned a potential seller named ‘ZAK’ who may have contacted him via WhatsApp. Surprisingly, he stated that he does not know this individual’s identity and has since discarded the contact information.

A Lack of Supporting Documentation

Moreover, EOCO’s disclosure revealed a significant lack of paper trail. The agency confirmed that the dancehall artiste does not possess any crucial documentation—such as receipts, invoices, or formal transfer documents—to prove legitimate ownership of the Lamborghini. The only related document in his possession is a customs declaration form, which notably bears the name of the convicted individual, Nana Kwabena Amuah.

This absence of standard proof of purchase has undoubtedly become a central focus of the ongoing investigation. Therefore, while Shatta Wale is now free on bail. The case however is far from closed as authorities continue to trace the origins of the vehicle and its connection to international crime
