EC Halts 2024 Presidential Election Ballot Printing

Following the death of Akua Donkor, the flagbearer of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP), the Electoral Commission of Ghana has been forced to halt the printing process of the election ballots

The statement was contained in a press statement from the EC signed by its deputy chairman of operations, Samuel Tettey, on 29 October 2024.

While others have speculated that the running mate Kwabena Agyeman Appiah Kubi (Roman Fada) is most likely to be the successor and flag bearer of the party, the Electoral Commission stated that  “while the 1992 constitution and the public elections regulations, 2020, C.I. 127, are not clear on processes to follow in the event of the death of a presidential candidate, Article 50 (4) of the 1992 constitution provides as follows: where at the close of nominations, but before the election, one of the candidates dies, a further period of the ten days shall be allowed for nominations…”

It therefore appears that the GFP will have to converge and nominate a member to represent the party as a flagbearer to contest for the December 7th polls.

Sources close to Akua Donkor’s running mate, Roman Fada, a broadcaster with Atinka FM, a private radio station in the capital Accra, have allegedly accepted to be the party’s flagbearer.
