The Ghana National Service Scheme (NSS) has uncovered payroll fraud in the Birim District of the Eastern Region, where some “fake” personnel allegedly received salaries without reporting for their mandatory national service.
According to the Authority, the District manager and MIS manager connived and included some individuals who are already employed as public servants and obviously did not show up for work, yet still received monthly. allowances.
Preliminary investigations suggest possible collusion between some NSS officials and district officers to facilitate same fraud in other Districts.
The NSS has launched an internal audit and is working with anti-corruption agencies to identify and prosecute other officials engaging in fraudulent activities.
So far, the two officials have been interdicted pending further investigations.
Efforts are underway to retrieve payments made to fraudulent beneficiaries. The NSS is strengthening its monitoring mechanisms to prevent future payroll fraud.
