The Botswana opposition party has won the 2024 elections thus ousting the ruling government after 58years in power.
The former president of the country Mokgweetsi Masisi concede defeat to the opposition leader Duma Boko.
The election results came as a shock to the democratic country, its neighbours and other countries around the world.
For the first time in 58 years, the Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) lost power to the Umbrella for Democratic Change on Friday which has been in existence for 54 years.
The outgoing president Mokgweetsi Maisisi pledged that “from tomorrow…I will start the process of handover…You can count on me to always be there to provide whatever guidance you want…we will retreat to being a loyal opposition”.
Chief Justice Terence Rannowane officially declared Boko the victor on Friday afternoon, confirming the final outcome of the election and the opposition party’s subsequent victory.
