Bawku Senior High School has been temporarily closed by the Municipal Education Directorate following the tragic fatal shooting of third-year student, Hakim Kundima, on the school’s campus.

The incident, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 26, involved unknown assailants reportedly scaling the school’s perimeter wall, entering a dormitory, and forcibly dragging Kundima outside before shooting him. This appears to have been a targeted attack, and the perpetrators fled the scene immediately afterwards. As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with the killing.

Hakim Kundima’s elder brother, Tahiru Kundima, confirmed the devastating incident to the media, stating that the Bawku Divisional Police Commander personally delivered the body to the family. He alleged that the killing may be connected to the long-standing conflict in the Bawku area, which has seen recurring violence in recent years. In response to the grave security concerns, Bawku Municipal Director of Education, Isaac Agbeko Azasoo, officially announced the school’s closure on Sunday, July 27, emphasizing the need to ensure the safety of both students and staff.

This tragic event at Bawku SHS unfortunately follows a similar attack on the same evening at Nalerigu Senior High School, where two students were also shot and killed by unidentified gunmen. These back-to-back incidents have significantly heightened concerns about security in senior high schools across the region. Investigations into the Bawku shooting are currently underway, and authorities have yet to release official details regarding the motive behind the attack or the identities of the suspects involved.
